Haricot beans from Pont l’Abbé
These famous beans travelled in the holds of ships from South America and adapted well to the soil in what was then Charent-Inférieure. Traditionally, this little bean finds its origins in the valley of the River Arnoult between Marennes and Rochefort.
The beans are small, slightly elongated and plump with a distinctive flavour and are appealing to amateur cooks and gourmands alike.
They can be cooked quickly and are easily digested. The soil in the marshland along the river is enriched by the floodwaters in the winter and we have long, sunny days in the summer. Voila! The secret behind the delicious mojhettes.
Haricot or mojhette? Mojhette is simply the local patois for haricot bean.
Oh! And we also would like to explain that “
L’Eloise” means sparkling, a flash of lightning, brightness.
